HEROIC COMEBACK AT NEW BRIDGE MEADOW

Goal heroes Mark Connolly and Matthew Williams

HAVERFORDWEST COUNTY 2 RHYL 4
RHYL re-established themselves as the top goalscorers in the Welsh Premier with a dynamic second half performance at the New Bridge Meadow today.
It looked grim at half time with Haver holding a two-goal lead, but the Lilywhites turned things around after the break to give their bid to qualify for Europe fresh hope.
County took a sixth minute lead when Lee Hudgell linked well with Jack Christopher down the left and raced into the box before slipping the ball neatly past the keeper.
Matthew Williams should have equalised when Chris Williams' pass put him clear in the box, but Lee Idzi produced a good low save to deny the striker.
And in the 23rd minute Christopher was left unmarked to head home a Tom Ramasut corner and make it 2-0 to the Bluebirds.
Rhyl were a different proposition in the second stanza and on 57 minutes Mark Connolly played a nice one-two with Matthew Williams before drilling low past Idzi from the edge of the box.
A minute later Matthew Williams' deep cross from the left picked out substitute Tyrone Kirk who sold a lovely dummy before applying a deft left-foot finish.
John Leah's through ball looked to have put Connolly in for the third, but his chip over Idzi drifted wide.
Rhyl were now all over the opposition and only the heroics of Idzi kept out Chris Williams' diving header from Kirk's cross via the right.
In the 69th minute Andrew Pearson strode forward from midfield and slick inter-play with Chris Williams gave Connolly time to pick his spot and make it 3-2 with his 29th goal of the season.
Five minutes from time the comeback was complete when Matthew Williams reached Martyn Naylor's long ball first and headed over Idzi for his 22nd of the campaign.
Earlier this season Connolly set a modern-day club record by scoring in eight successive games.
Today Matthew Williams netted for the fourth match in a row. Just a thought......
