LATE GOALS SEAL IT FOR LILYWHITES

NEWTOWN 2 (Ward 38 pen, Anoruo 55)
RHYL 4 (M Williams 5 & 16; Strong 85, Connolly 90)
WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE - SEP 19, 2009
TWO goals in the last five minutes sealed champions Rhyl an eighth successive win at Latham Park and ensured they remain top of the league.
The Lilywhites also made it 24 Welsh Premier matches unbeaten and 20 games without an away league defeat.
Striker Matthew Williams repeated last season's feat of scoring twice for the Lilies at Newtown.
In the fifth minute he was on hand to roll the ball over the line after Mark Connolly's header from a Tyrone Kirk cross was only partially saved by Robins keeper David Maguire.
Then in the 16th minute, a Martyn Naylor throw from the right was flicked on and Williams fired an instinctive volley into the left-hand corner of the net.
Rhyl looked comfortable but handed Newtown a lifeline after 38 minutes when George Horan brought down Ross Stephens in the box and Nicky Ward's resultant penalty could only be palmed into the roof of the net by keeper James Coates.
The hosts came out firing after the break and on 55 minutes substitute Adam Worton delivered a high ball from the right and Stephens' sublime touch gave Obi Anoruo space to drill low past Coates for 2-2.
It could have got worse for the champions when Neil Mitchell's header from a Worton cross came back off the bar.
Rhyl striker Lee Hunt's troubled past with referees in the Welsh Premier then returned to haunt him when a dangerous challenge on Andrew Williams resulted in a red card.
Undeterred, the 10-man Lilywhites kept on battling and five minutes from time Strong was left free at the back post to head home a Gareth Owen corner.
Substitute Paul Smith smacked the bar before in injury time Owen released Connolly who was initially denied by the advancing Maguire, but then on the turn curled a left foot beauty into the net to score for the fourth successive match.
RHYL: Coates, Naylor (Smith 80), Stones, Horan, Strong, Leah, Connolly, Owen, Hunt, M Williams, Kirk (Doran 89). Subs: Cameron, Dowling, Pritchard.

Poor performance, however a win is a win and I will settle for the three points. More of a talking point for me was the dismissal of Lee Hunt for a tackle that is fast becoming a trade mark for the striker. Only seven day previous he launched a carbon copy tackle in the second half of the Bangor match for which he was rightly shown a yellow card. With forwards at the club these days as rare as hens teeth this latest indiscretion leaves us in serious trouble. Is Lee fast becoming a luxury the club can ill afford?
As always JDH a well delivered comment. I share your concerns about Hunt. We all know how outstanding Lee can be, his performance against Bangor was superb, but what is the point of having a striker who will miss a third of the season through suspensions. It was the same problem with Kendall. The club seem to be backing Hunt, but to me it looked like he dived in recklessly and when you do that you run the risk of a red card. Regardless of Hunt's intent, the referee only gets one look and on this occasion I feel he was right.
Lee, as a player I think the world of you but please curb those tackles as they do no-one any good at the end of the day - least of all yourself.
Thanks for your comments of support Eamon, yes I agree whether there was intent on Lee's behalf or not and as much as the fans adore him, his tackles are ugly, he leads with his forearm on every occassion when leaping for the ball. Really sorry but he's his own worse enemy and its really difficult to sympathise with him, he will always fall foul of referee's. John Hulse always compensated for Lee's indiscretions by having a glut of forwards, unfortuately Greg has not worked this one out yet?
Seen much worse tackles, he went in with only 1 foot althougg slightly high and WON the ball,. That didnt seem to matter to the referee.
Was a yellow for me due the highness of it.
As for the game, not the best performance but a winning one and we dug it out, all credit to Stongy who went for the win by playing only 3 at the back.
Your story was really informative, thkans!
Smack-dab what I was loiokng for—ty!
