Sorry to be pedantic and bring up this point again but it is relevant. Surely it was Glan Conwy RESERVES that our reserves played to day, not Glan Conwy against whom our reserves have had godd tussles in the last few seasons ? The relevance is that our "reserves" are this season playing at the level which was previously occupied by our Thirds in the Clwyd Premier (or maybe even lower), so surely there's practically no chance of progression from the new "reserves" or (traditionally) thirds to the first team ? Neither will first-team squad members be given useful run-outs, as happened in the past, in this lwer level of "reserves". Or have I got it toally wrong ?
Ffred, I already stated earlier in the paragraph that the league is called the Reserves Premier League, so why is there a need to use the word Reserves after Glan Conwy again when it is already obvious it is the reserves?
Some teams in this new league appear to be mediocre, one or two are not so bad, but they are all Clwyd League teams and therefore yes, lower level opposition to what Rhyl have been used to in the Welsh Alliance.
Ffred, I will from now on, if you think it clarifies things, use the word Reserves after every team, no problem at all.
Thanks, Dave, for the clarification. My post was certainly not aimed at your clarity of reporting. As you rightly say, the lague is clearly entitled a Reserve league and therefore there is no need to suffix the word "Reserves" after the name of every club. My post was aimed at exposing the misleading nature of one or two sugestions which have come from club officials - unless I have misunderstood them - who have suggested that the small size of our first-team squad is in fact a great opportunity for our reserves to get into the first team. That would have been true last year - or for any of the last 50 years ! - but far less so this year as the newly-formed "reserves" are playing at the same level as the previous "Thirds". People remember our games against the likes of Glan Conwy and might have forgotten that that is not the team against which our "reserves" are now playing, but rather their second team - which could no way provide the sort of test so that our reserves could step up. Anyway, I'm labouring the point and won't mention it again and, no, you don't need to stick the word "Reserves" after the name of every club in the Reserves League !!!
Spot on Ffred, thanks for your contributions as always.
Just thought i'd leave a comment after having read numerous remarks about the reserve side.Have any of you seen them play ?do you know any of them?the answer to this is probably a big no to most who have made comments,so lets have a bit of suppert please, and if you bother to watch them you will see that there are a few players that can play in the first team if given the opportuninty.
But isn't that the problem - that they are unlikely to be given the opportunity because the gap between playing against Glan Conwy Reserves one week and then Welshpool, let alone TNS, the next week is too great for most managers toi take a chance. Far more likely that the best players will be taken by a Cymru Alliance club as the next step in their progression.
Not meant in any way as a slur on the efforts of the players and the coaching staff for the Reserves. Were it not for them, we would have nothing at all.
For the future, maybe a good idea would be to make an extended (regionalised) League Cup a comp for Under-23s with provision for say 3 over-age players. That way we could begin to bridge the gap. It was noticeable that only one young player was given a full game tonight in the League Cup with another as a sub. Besides them, the same senior players were trotted out yet again - unlike Airbus.
I think it won't be long till a North Wales reserves league will be formed. The Welsh FA are putting it in gradually. All North Wales Welsh Premier teams would be involved so the standard would be better.
I saw an interesting set-up in France many years ago. The reserves team played before the 1st team game, against the same opposition.
Rhyl have perfect set-up for this. The reserves could play on the pitch (where the 3rds used to play) and then fans could go a bit earlier to watch them before going onto the 1st team game at Belle Vue.
