RHYL FC SUPPORT BETTER HEALTH INITIATIVE
AS a kick-off to local No Smoking Day activities, Conwy and Denbighshire Local Public Health Team is sponsoring two football matches to raise awareness.
They include the Rhyl v Neath Athletic Welsh Premier clash at Belle Vue this Saturday (2.30pm).
Ann Evans, Senior Public Health Practitioner, Conwy and Denbighshire Local Public Health Team, National Public Health service for Wales (NPHS) said: "Everyone knows the risks to health of smoking and yet 27 per cent of men and 24 per cent of women in Wales still smoke.
"Smoking kills around 6,000 people in Wales every year and it is the single most preventable cause of premature death.
"We are sponsoring these football matches to encourage people that there's no better time than national No Smoking Day to kick the habit for good.
"The benefits of quitting are immediate whatever age you are. Within weeks your breathing will improve and you will begin to feel cleaner and healthier. The risk of serious illness starts going down immediately and this continues as your body recovers."
Kelly Davies, Commercial Director for Rhyl FC, said: "We are pleased to be working with the NPHS to bring the smoking cessation message to our fans.
"None of the players of Rhyl FC smoke because they know the damaging effects it would have on their health, physical fitness and ability to play the game.
"We would encourage all our fans to think seriously about the effect smoking is having on their health and the health of their family."
The matches (the other will be Colwyn Bay v Warrington Town on March 7) will highlight the action being undertaken in the two counties to promote No Smoking Day.
Rhyl players will support the Conwy and Denbighshire Local Public Health Team on a dedicated No Smoking Day stand at Morrisons in Rhyl on Wednesday, March 11.
Players will help public health staff demonstrate the savings that could be made by stopping smoking and encourage shoppers to pledge to quit.
The event will be sponsored by Conwy and Denbighshire Local Public Health Team, Stop Smoking Wales, Conwy County Borough Council, Denbighshire County Council, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and the Credit Union.
