REED STRIKE SENDS LILYWHITES FOUR POINTS CLEAR

ABERYSTWYTH TOWN 0
RHYL 1 (Reed 62)
WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE - FEBRUARY 15, 2009

ON a weekend where their main title rivals slipped up Rhyl moved four points clear at the Welsh Premier summit with a hard-earned but well deserved victory at Park Avenue.
This much-publicised needle match was given added spice by the fact Luke Sherbon, whose recent transfer to the Lilywhites from Aberystwyth was shrouded in controversy, turned out against his old club.
And Brian Coyne's side certainly did not hold back in the tackle on midfielder Sherbon who admirably kept his cool and rose above the intimidatory tactics.
The first half produced few chances, the closest call being a 20-yarder from Rhyl's Mark Connolly which clattered the post.
After the break the Lilies changed formation and were more adventurous in attack.
It paid dividends on 62 minutes when Luke Holden's shot was parried by keeper Dave Roberts, Neil Roberts fed the ball back into the six-yard box and Jamie Reed finished from close range for his 10th goal this season.
Moments later Reed headed off target from the same distance, then not long after the same player had an effort cleared off the line.
Aber had a couple of chances from breakaways, Ross Stephens created the best opportunity when entering the box from the left, but he skewed off target.
Overall, a fully merited win for Rhyl who remain unbeaten away from home in the WPL this season and are now undefeated in 19 league matches against Aber.
This was also Allan Bickerstaff's side's sixth straight league victory.

Great result yesterday. After just shading the 1st half we picked up the pace in the 2nd half on yet another crappy pitch and fully deserved the win.

People who criticise this team for lack of effort should have seen yesterdays game. Against a side that seemed determined to kick us off the park, Sherbon and Roberts in particular and with the no protection from an inept referee, the lads outfought and ultimately outplayed Aber and took the points.

Neil Roberts was fantastic up front on his own despite being repeatedly fouled by both Aber centre halves, neither of whom should have finished the game, Conno and Sherbon gave us fantastic energy in midfield and the introduction of Danny WIlliams brought a calming influence at just the right time.

With TNS and LLanelli slipping, up 3 crucial points and another of the tough away trips negotitiated

Just a thought, but where was the referee from? My informant said that he was from Llanelli. If that's true then it seems poor judgement from those who appoint the officials. I must say that I'm not inferring that the official was anything but fair and that he did not see anything wrong with some of the tackles by the defenders but surely appointing someone from the town of your nearest rivals does not send a good message out.

Total disgrace that Brian Coyne refused to shake Allan Bickerstaff's hand after the game. It should have been the other way round as the bitter scot obviously instructed his players to try to kick Rhyl off the park, especially Sherbon. Coyne showed himself up for the under-achieving loser he is, come on Prestatyn boot them out of the Welsh Cup too.

Petty and childish. Talking to Sherbs they've even banned him from the club, except when he's playing. How sad is that.

At the end of the day he's left Aber to join the best supported and most progressive club in the league. A club that's had 5 successive seasons in Europe and currently sits top of the table. No doubt he's had a pay rise too. Why should he pass up an opportunity like that. Okay Rhyl made a poop of the 7 day rule but he was coming anyway.

I wonder if Hugh Griffiths will refuse to shake hands because Aber took Ross Stephens from Welshpoo

I think Prestatyn are more likely to concentrate on league survival than get an away win at aber.

Agree that the conduct of both coyne and aber in general was very bad.

Don't agree tho with the assesment of Coyne as a manager. He did a good job for a long time at newtown, not just getting them top-3 but also playing a style of football universally recognised late 90s. Probably just very frustrated that he never gets the sort of financial resources which would give him a chance of going up a level

Your message was sent into quarantine because of the original word you used. Because I wanted to use the post I had to change the word. I apologise for the use of poop, first thing that came into my head.
