RHYL 4 (Strong 26, Holden 40, O'Neill 54, Connolly 87)
CAERNARFON TOWN 0
WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE - FEB 28, 2009
IT ended up four but it could have been more, they're the cream of the crop four points clear at the top.
No I'm not turning into Ted Rogers, but Rhyl ran out comfortable winners at Belle Vue today over a Caernarfon side who performed a lot better than one would expect from a team seven points adrift at the bottom.
The visitors coped fairly comfortably with the leaders until the deadlock was broken on 26 minutes.
A deep free-kick into the Town box was headed on by Paul O'Neill and defender Greg Strong showed his strength before stabbing in from close range.
THIS WAS RHYL'S 100TH GOAL IN ALL COMPETITIONS THIS SEASON - WELL DONE GREG!
Andrew Jackson's 30-yard free-kick brought a good low save from Lilies keeper Michael Jones before the hosts made it 2-0 in the 40th minute.
O'Neill crossed from the right and the ball came to Luke Holden whose deflected shot flew in past keeper Lee Guinion.
Holden should have scored again soon after the restart when a sliced Guinion clearance fell to the left-winger but he volleyed wide of a gaping goal.
Caernarfon then had their best chance when Jonathan Humphries put in substitute Kieran Molyneux whose 18-yard effort dipped just over.
Two minutes later Rhyl were 3-0 up when Guinion failed to deal with a Holden free-kick and O'Neill converted at the back post.
The Canaries were reduced to 10 men on 63 minutes when Marc Dermott received a second yellow card for kicking the ball away following the award of a free-kick for an illegal challenge on Holden by Tom Grice (anyone remember Ray Grice, the Brummie slob from Crossroads?).
After that Rhyl created a host of chances but their shooting was all too often off target.
Luke Sherbon, Mark Connolly, substitute Jamie Reed and Matthew Williams all failed to test the keeper when they should have done better.
Finally, on 87 minutes, a long ball from the back by George Horan saw Connolly nip in ahead of the advancing Guinion to nod in goal number four.
It was Conno's first of the season but 15th career league goal for Rhyl, putting him joint 10th in the club's all-time Welsh Premier list.
RHYL: Jones, O'Neill, C Roberts (Stones 79), Horan, Strong, D Williams (G Owen 71), Sherbon, M Williams, N Roberts (Reed 77), Connolly, Holden.

Involved in three of the goals, scoring one himself, and a great all-round game in the right-back position. What a versatile performer he is.

RHYL FC have been expelled from the 2008/09 North Wales Coast FA Challenge Cup competition.
A NWCFA disciplinary commission decided yesterday that the Lilywhites did break the rules in playing Luke Holden in the 6-0 first round victory over Llanrug as the player was not registered the stipulated 14 days before the tie's conference date of January 6.
The match actually went ahead on January 20 due to an earlier postponement with Holden having signed for the Lilies on December 29, but NWCFA rules state the conference date is the only one that counts.
It means Llanrug United of the Welsh Alliance are now reinstated into the competition and play Halkyn United at home in the next round.
Rhyl are now out of all knockout competitions and can focus all their efforts on winning the Welsh Premier League, which they currently lead by a point from Llanelli.
NEIL Roberts' double against Connah's Quay Nomads on Saturday pushed him into the list of Rhyl's top 10 all-time Welsh Premier League goalscorers.
Roberts is now on 16 goals, making him joint ninth with Scott Millington.

RHYL FC have been charged with playing an ineligible player in their NWCFA Senior Challenge Cup match versus Llanrug United on January 20, reports the North Wales Coast FA website.
A disciplinary commission has been convened for this coming Thursday, February 26, to discuss the matter with Rhyl facing the possibility of being kicked out of the competition.
Rhyl thrashed Llanrug of the Welsh Alliance 6-0, but fielded Luke Holden, who was not signed 14 days before the tie's original conference date of January 6.
The Lilywhites also had Luke Sherbon on the team sheet but he was withdrawn just before kick-off. However Holden went ahead and played and scored twice, despite the fact he was only signed on December 29.
The NWCFA is unique in the conference date rule.
The fact the player played in the Challenge Cup 22 days after signing would have made him eligible in any other competition.
THE race to win the Welsh Premier League title must surely now be down to three teams - Rhyl, Llanelli and The New Saints.
Here are the remaining games for the chief contenders.
RHYL: Played 23 Pts 59
Feb 28 - Caernarfon Town (h)
Mar 03 - Technogroup Welshpool (a)
Mar 07 - Carmarthen Town (a)
Mar 13 - Bangor City (h)

Apr 11 - Llanelli (a)
Apr 13 - Prestatyn Town (a)
Apr 18 - The New Saints (h)
Apr 25 - Newi Cefn Druids (a)
PROSPECTS: Very good but some hard games to come. March will be crucial with tough trips to Carmarthen and Port Talbot and a home clash with Bangor. By the end of March their chances will be clearer. Seven of their last 11 fixtures are away but they have been better on their travels anyway.
LLANELLI: Played 24 Points 58
Mar 07 - Newtown (h)
Mar 14 - Caernarfon Town (a)
Mar 20 - Port Talbot Town (h)
Mar 28 - Porthmadog (h)

Apr 11 - Rhyl (h)
Apr 13 - Carmarthen Town (a)
Apr 17 - Aberystwyth Town (a)
Apr 25 - Connah's Quay Nomads (h)
PROSPECTS: Packed with experience and the fact they have been here before will help them. Six of their last 10 matches are at home (Neath date will be changed), but trips to Haverfordwest, Carmarthen and Aberystwyth will really test them.
THE NEW SAINTS: Played 25 Points 51
Feb 27 - Connah's Quay Nomads (a)
Mar 7 - Neath Athletic (a)
Mar 14 - Aberystwyth Town (h)
Mar 28 - Carmarthen Town (h)
Apr 4 (to be rearranged due to League Cup final) - Bangor City (a)
Apr 10 - Caersws (h)
Apr 13 - Technogroup Welshpool (a)
Apr 18 - Rhyl (a)
Apr 25 - Airbus UK Broughton (h)
PROSPECTS: To win the title they will have to go on a dynamic winning run and hope both Rhyl and Llanelli drop points. Definitely the outsiders of the three, too many draws have let them down.

RHYL 3 (C Roberts 18, N Roberts 24 & 42)
WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE - FEBRUARY 21, 2009
THIS was a magnificent seventh straight league victory for Rhyl - but it ended up a close run thing at the Deeside Stadium.
The Lilywhites took the lead on 18 minutes when a Mark Connolly free-kick bounced back off jittery Nomads keeper Craig Vernon and Chris Roberts was first on the scene to convert the rebound.
Neil Roberts had already had a goal ruled out for offside before on 24 minutes the ex-Wrexham striker headed in a deep Connolly cross at the back post.
And when Neil Roberts made it 3-0 with his 20th goal of the season via a bullet header from a Gareth Owen free-kick it looked like Rhyl were in for a bagful.
Roberts so nearly completed his hat-trick when his low drive came back off the post, but right on half time Lilies keeper Michael Jones only got a weak hand on Danny Forde's effort and Nomads were back in it.
Neil Roberts chipped against the post early in the second half then saw his rebound cleared off the line by Ben Alston.
And Quay set up a tense last 10 minutes when Peter Doran's deep cross from the left crept in at the back post although Phil Doran clearly appeared to clatter keeper Jones while the ball was in the air.
Neighbours Prestatyn were unable to do Rhyl a favour as they went down fighting 1-0 at home to Llanelli, but the Lilywhites remain a point clear of the champions with a game in hand.
Rhyl: Jones, Connolly, C Roberts, Horan, Strong, G Owen, Sherbon (D Williams 54), O'Neill, N Roberts, Reed (M Williams 80), Holden (Stones 46). Att: 356.

WELSH ALLIANCE LEAGUE - FEBRUARY 21, 2009
A WEEK after Rhyl were on top of the world after ending Bethesda's 100% record Jon Stazicker's side came crashing back down to earth at Llanrwst.
The Lilywhites' inconsistent away form which has blighted their season came back to haunt them as they lost for the fifth time on their travels in the Welsh Alliance.
Llanrwst had been the last side to defeat Rhyl, a 3-0 result at Belle Vue on December 6, but since then the Lilies had won five on the bounce.
The only goal came in the first half when Lee Allen sidefooted across the box for Luke Roberts to score from close range.
Rhyl were well below par, their biggest threat being top scorer Mike Roose who fired one good effort just past the post.
In the second period the Lilies were much improved but their finishing failed them.
Tom Roberts sliced wide from close range, Tom Patel had a header well saved by Paul Roberts and Roose beat the keeper with a chip but the ball only found the side-netting.
Kieron Evans went closest for the travelling side but saw his shot cleared off the goal-line. Rhyl were worthy of a draw, but their dire first half display ultimately proved their downfall.
To complete a miserable day Bethesda won 2-0 at Pwllheli and knocked Rhyl off the top.

LLANRWST UNITED v RHYL RESERVES
WELSH ALLIANCE LEAGUE
SATURDAY 2.30pm
REVENGE will be on the minds of Rhyl Reserves when they visit Llanrwst United this weekend determined to build on Saturday's landmark victory over Bethesda.
Jon Stazicker's side returned to the top of the Welsh Alliance by ending Pesda's 100% record but they will now want to also break the hearts of a Rwsters outfit who are the only team to beat them at Belle Vue this season.
Chris Williams' men were convincing 3-0 winners at BV in December, and with United also occupying third spot they will present another tough hurdle for the Lilies on Saturday.
But after beating Bethesda, who were on a run of 15 straight wins, who need Rhyl fear!
"I'm overwhelmed," admitted Stazicker after last Saturday's win.
"It's not a case of beating Bethesda so much as gaining three points, but we proved we are a top team like them.
"I also thought Sam Brewerton did an excellent job as stand-in keeper in the second half."
Rhyl took a 37th minute lead when Tom Patel finished off Mike Roose's cross from close range.
Two minutes later Pesda were level when Richie Owen headed home.
The hosts were unlucky not to win a penalty before the break when Carl Thomas handled Roose's shot on the line.
Rhyl's well deserved winner arrived when Roose finished off Patel's brilliant cross in the 64th minute for his 22nd goal of the season.
CONNAH'S QUAY NOMADS v RHYL
WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE
SATURDAY 2.30pm
AT one time Connah's Quay were Rhyl's bogey side - now the roles have been reversed.
The Lilywhites are unbeaten in their last 11 league clashes with the Nomads and would dearly love to make that 12 on Saturday when Allan Bickerstaff's side visit Deeside Stadium.
It will be far from easy against Steve O'Shaughnessy's men who lie a respectable ninth in the Welsh Premier, although they have lost five of their last seven.
Rhyl are flying, though, unbeaten away from home in the league all season and four points clear at the top after six straight victories.
"We always expect a tough game against Connah's Quay," said Bickerstaff.
"We beat them 2-0 earlier in the season but they were hard to break down and good in attack themselves. Every team raises their game against us and with it being a local derby it gives it added spice."
If the Lilies show the same battling spirit against Quay they did at Aberystwyth on Sunday they will not go far wrong.
Jamie Reed's 62nd minute winner ensured Rhyl stretched their undefeated run in the league against Aber to 19 matches.
"It was a fantastic performance, thoroughly professional from the goalkeeper right up to Neil Roberts up front," Bickerstaff added.
But the senior coach still refuses to talk about the title, despite the fact main rivals Llanelli and The New Saints were held to unexpected draws last weekend.
"There's so many hard games still to come. Yes, results went our way over the weekend but it's still too early to be talking about titles."
In 29 Welsh Premier tussles between Saturday's foes since 1994/95, Nomads have won 14 and Rhyl 11 with four draws.
Lilywhites skipper George Horan is expected back from suspension to face his old club.

ABERYSTWYTH TOWN 0
RHYL 1 (Reed 62)
WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE - FEBRUARY 15, 2009
ON a weekend where their main title rivals slipped up Rhyl moved four points clear at the Welsh Premier summit with a hard-earned but well deserved victory at Park Avenue.
This much-publicised needle match was given added spice by the fact Luke Sherbon, whose recent transfer to the Lilywhites from Aberystwyth was shrouded in controversy, turned out against his old club.
And Brian Coyne's side certainly did not hold back in the tackle on midfielder Sherbon who admirably kept his cool and rose above the intimidatory tactics.
The first half produced few chances, the closest call being a 20-yarder from Rhyl's Mark Connolly which clattered the post.
After the break the Lilies changed formation and were more adventurous in attack.
It paid dividends on 62 minutes when Luke Holden's shot was parried by keeper Dave Roberts, Neil Roberts fed the ball back into the six-yard box and Jamie Reed finished from close range for his 10th goal this season.
Moments later Reed headed off target from the same distance, then not long after the same player had an effort cleared off the line.
Aber had a couple of chances from breakaways, Ross Stephens created the best opportunity when entering the box from the left, but he skewed off target.
Overall, a fully merited win for Rhyl who remain unbeaten away from home in the WPL this season and are now undefeated in 19 league matches against Aber.
This was also Allan Bickerstaff's side's sixth straight league victory.
