UNBEATEN RECORD GOES DOWN THE PAN
RHYL 2 (M Williams 87, G Owen 90)
PORT TALBOT TOWN 3 (Fahiya 34, Rose 45 & 63)
WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE - NOV 15, 2008
WHAT a strange afternoon this turned out to be.
Rhyl lost their unbeaten league record against a side which had failed to pick up as much as a point at Belle Vue in eight previous visits.
It was no fluke result, though. Port Talbot were worthy winners even though a dramatic late rally from Rhyl almost earned them a fortunate draw with substitute Josh Johnson hitting the post with the last kick of the game.
The only consolation for the Lilywhites is they remain top of the table despite this shock setback.
Llanelli could only draw 3-3 at Porthmadog, so Rhyl stay at the summit on goal difference.
After the first half hour, it looked likely that the Lilies would go on to complete a routine victory with only the heroics of Port keeper Kristian Rogers keeping his side in the contest.
But then suddenly the miserly Rhyl defence which had conceded just four goals in 11 league starts began to play like strangers.
Neil Roberts saw an early shot blocked before the home side had a scare when Drew Fahiya latched on to a poor header from Greg Strong, nipped in ahead of keeper Lee Kendall, but his chip drifted off target.
On 12 minutes Danny Williams' lofted ball put Matthew Williams in the clear but his well-struck low shot was superbly stopped one-handed by Rogers.
Rhyl were guilty of a glaring miss on 17 minutes when Jamie Reed's byeline cross was only parried by Rogers into the path of Neil Roberts who scooped over a gaping goal.
Only a great interception by Leigh De Vulgt denied Matthew Williams a sure strike at goal from a Craig Jones cross, then Greg Stones volleyed straight at Rogers after a Gareth Owen free-kick was cleared to him.
Port served notice of their capabilities in the 28th minute when James Burgin's cross from the left was met by a powerful downward header from Martin Rose but Kendall saved impressively.
In the 32nd minute an Owen free-kick was blocked by the Talbot wall but the ball came to George Horan who let fly from 15 yards only for Rogers to produce a fantastic tip-over.
Then on 34 minutes, against the run of play, a Rose headed flick found Fahiya in far too much space, and the tricky wide man coolly rounded Kendall before slotting in the opener.
Rhyl looked certain to equalise when Mark Connolly's cross flew invitingly into the six-yard box, but neither Reed nor Strong could get a touch.
On the stroke of half time Belle Vue was stunned into silence when from a Mathew Thompson free-kick Rose jumped in ahead of the flapping Kendall and headed home. Half-time: 0-2.
The start of the second half saw Port grow in stature and they began to look the more quality outfit as Rhyl struggled to retain possession.
Burgin hit a firm drive straight at Kendall before on 63 minutes the third visiting goal arrived.
Man of the match Fahiya made a monkey out of Stones down the right. scooped the ball to the back post and Rose headed in off the bar with the Rhyl defence again a shambles. The same defence which squeezed the life out of Bangor four days earlier were being made to look second rate.
Rhyl launched non-stop attacks in the last 20 minutes, but initially struggled to create clear-cut openings as they tried too hard to force the action with the passing far too inaccurate.
Matthew Williams miskicked from a Paul O'Neill cross, then Strong's off-target shot hit Williams and could have gone anywhere but found Rogers' arms.
Josh Johnson's effort was blocked by Lee Surman and there was a suspicion of handball, then Neil Roberts' flick from a Johnson cross went agonisingly wide.
It was starting to look like Rhyl wouldn't score if they played till next week.
Then on 87 minutes came a lifeline. Danny Williams crossed to the back post, Craig Jones headed across the six-yard box and Matthew Williams volleyed home.
Moments later Rogers produced an heroic block at Williams' feet as all of a sudden a Port team which blew a 3-0 and 4-1 lead against Llanelli the previous weekend began panicking.
They could have made it 4-1, though, when Rose broke clear from halfway but missed out on a hat-trick by steering wide.
Five minutes of injury time were issued and in the fifth minute Matthew Williams' cross was drilled home by Gareth Owen - 3-2 and time for one more attack? Yes.
Port tried to head out for a corner but Johnson stopped the ball from crossing the line, chipped to the back stick, hit the woodwork, and Mathew Walsh produced a desperate clearance. Seconds later the final whistle blew and Port celebrated a landmark victory.
Too little, too late from Rhyl? Ultimately yes, and credit must go to the visitors for breaking the trend of travelling teams coming to BV to defend.
The Steelmen took their chances when they came, boast one of the league's best strikers in Rose, and returned home worthy victors.
RHYL: Kendall, Connolly (O'Neill 68), Stones, Horan, Strong, D Williams, G Owen, Reed (Johnson 56), N Roberts, M Williams, Jones. Unused sub: Wilson.

Dear o dear! had I not known any different I could have sworn the ghostly image of John Hulse had reappeared at Belle Vue! I felt really sorry for the seagulls, having to dodge footballs for 90 mins, what happened to the 'pass and move' game plan that has been so evident all season? Biggest culprit for me was Kendall who from the first minute seemed intent on 'booting the ball' upfield as far as he could on every opportunity? I felt really sorry for AB, who to bring off must been a real poser for him, unfortunately he only had 3 subs and not 11! Granted the inclusion of Paul O'Neill for the last 20 or so minutes for the ineffective Connolly (who in particular had a real stinker) perked things up and resulted in Craig Jones 'getting a sniff of a pass' Consolation was as Dave J said still top (just) and surely it will be 'many a moon' before the 'whole team' gets such an off day?
bad day at the office - it happens. poor all over the pitch really. credit to port talbot though. we could never get to grips with their energetic midfield. we'll bounce back...
As usual JDH spot on. How can a team which has played so well all season perform collectively like such a bunch of fools on the same afternoon. Kendall - at fault for two of the goals, lucky not to be sent off; Connolly - worst game in a Rhyl shirt, appalling passing; Stones - woeful in defence; Horan - one of the better ones; Strong - shaky; Danny Williams - overrun in midfield; Gareth Owen - too many errors; Jamie Reed - waste of space yet again; Neil Roberts - anonymous, terrible miss; Matty Williams - never gave in; Craig Jones - final ball let him down yet again. Subs: Johnson - made a difference, almost equalised; O'Neill - gave Rhyl an added something, unlucky to miss out so often; put him in at right back and gives Connolly a break. Okay one bad performance and we have to forgive them, but we can't afford too many like that. Port Talbot are a nothing side but we made them look good.
For once I do agree with JDH.
It looked for a long time that we felt all we had to do was be on the same field as them and we'd win.
By the time we did play with more pace and a bit more guile we were 3-0 down.
The supply to the front 2 was very poor. With the midfield we've got I don't believe we can play with 2 out and out wingers. Danny lacks pace, Gaz Owen and Jimmy Kelly are both over 35 and it really showed on Saturday as PT worked the ball around our midfield way to easy. Murtagh back from Wrexham or Sherbon from Aber in the transfer window, or at least someone of that age and quality are a must if we are to go on and win the league.
Until then back to 3 in midfield and let the full backs supply the width.
Big off day, lets hope its the kick up the backside that will propel us on to another long unbeaten run
Definite kick up the backside required, how AB can prefer Reed to Johnson I am at a loss to know? If he is going to play 2 strikers and 2 wide midfielers then it has to be Jones and Johnson. Really concerned about our 2 wing backs messrs Connolly and Stones I've 'banged on' all season that defensively they are both naive! Stones was given a torrid and humiliating time by Drew Fahiya never being within ' mile' of him all afternoon. Dave J granted Fahiya the accolade of man of the match - wrong Stones and his co-defenders 'gifted' the Tommy Mutton lookalike that honour. I agree with Toss O'Neill deserves a run out, give Connolly a break and I'm afraid I would rest Stones also and give Chris Roberts a game. Murtagh would be a great aquisition, combative, mobile and creative and excellent cover for the ageing tired legs of Owen, Kelly and Wilson.
Well that's our bad game out of the way, can only get better after that. With hindsight perhaps we should have known it was not going to be our day when Neil Roberts missed from five yards.
The football gods were against us and I'm sure the lads will not let it happen again. Having said that credit has to go to Port Talbot as they came to play, to get stuck into us and not settle for the point (Aberystwyth take note!). I was very impressed with Drew Fahiya (not too sure about the red boots though) - a very good player but one that we should have been very aware of as he's made some headlines already this season, trouble is we gave him acres of space and a calender full of time - took his goal well and plagued our back four. Must agree with Dave and make him my man of the match.
Some poor individual performances that have been well summed up in previous posts but we need to turn the result on it's head and use it to inspire the starting eleven for Friday night.
Really like the picture Dave, but really can't recall Stones ever once getting that close to Fahiya in the 90 minutes? 'The wonders of technology and picture enhancement I guess'!
Sorry JDH, he did - but if the picture had been taken a couple of seconds later it would show Fahiya wriggling past him to set up their third goal and leaving Stones' face the colour of Fahiya boots!
