JON Stazicker's Welsh Alliance leaders failed to transfer their outstanding league form into knockout competition when they exited the Cookson Cup at the first stage today.
Despite having first team striker Jamie Reed in their line-up, the Lilywhites put in a poor performance against a Rhydymwyn side which thoroughly deserved their win.
"We were absolutely awful," said Stazicker. "We didn't look interested from the word go. Rhydymwyn wanted it more and were the better side."
With skipper Scott Millington (pictured) expected to be out for up to eight weeks after suffering a broken bone in his left foot, as well as having numerous other players either injured or unavailable, Rhyl were not at their strongest, but Stazicker refused to make excuses.
Jamie Jones was forced to make a good early save at his near post from a Richard Whittaker effort and it was against the run of play when Rhyl grabbed a 27th minute lead.
A long ball from Adam France set Mike Roose on his way and Rhyl's top scorer slotted in his 11th goal of the season past Rhyd keeper Danny Stanton.
Five minutes later Rhydymwyn were level when Whittaker drove home a loose ball in the box. Before half time danger man Whittaker also headed against the post from a Jay Hughes cross.
The second half saw no improvement from the Lilies and on 72 minutes poor defending allowed Mark Gunther to fire into the bottom corner.
Kieran Evans was forced to clear off the line before late on Rhyl could have forced extra time but Chris Roberts was off target with a header from a Jack Roberts free-kick.
