BELLE VUE STALEMATE

The Rhyl crowd prepare to celebrate but this effort from George Horan was ruled outRHYL 0

WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE - SEP 27, 2008

THE longest running jinx in Welsh football continued as Rhyl made it 18 league matches unbeaten against Aberystwyth, but the Lilywhites will have been frustrated to drop another two points which cost them the leadership of the Welsh Premier.
Mark Connolly so nearly won this game for the 10-man Lilies in the 90th minute when his overhead kick came back off the post.
A deciding goal would have been just reward for the hosts who generally dominated despite having Neil Roberts red-carded on 53 minutes for a bad challenge on Aneurin Thomas.
Aber defended stoutly, though, and will have been delighted to come away with a result which knocked Rhyl off top spot.
Town's impressive keeper Dave Roberts superbly tipped over a fourth minute Connolly free-kick then denied Jamie Reed from close range before somehow keeping out a Josh Johnson rocket.
Aber's only serious threat of the first half came when Geoff Kellaway broke clear and was thwarted by the onrushing Lee Kendall. From the resulting Chris Venables corner, Graham Evans' header missed by a fraction.
The hosts had another opening right on half time when Reed flicked on Connolly's throw, but Craig Jones miscued his volley.
After striker Roberts saw red in the second half, moments later Aber manager Brian Coyne was sent to the stands by Irish exchange referee Padraig Sutton for dissent following an altercation between the two benches over the sending off incident.
Reed and Greg Stones fluffed good opportunities before on 74 minutes George Horan volleyed home but was controversially adjudged offside. Seriously bad decision.
Substitute Sion Evans went close with a header for the visitors from his first touch, then a minute from time Connolly's free-kick missed by inches.
The game was into injury time when Carl Owen headed on Stones' cross and Connolly's overhead came back off the upright.
Referee Sutton had a nightmare. He seemed to be incapable of spotting a handball - Rhyl had at least three decent shouts for a penalty - the most blatant one from Thomas before Roberts' sending off.
Moments later Roberts was guilty of a nasty challenge from behind on Thomas and was rightly sent for an early bath.
Aber defended well enough, but even when they had a man advantage they did not show any sense of adventure, save for a couple of fast counter attacks Teams coming to Belle Vue to frustrate has been a common occurrence in recent seasons and will surely be even more in evidence this term.
However, Rhyl have the players to counter this, it is just that today they failed to do so. Reed lacked his usual sharpness and Roberts had not made a great impact before his dismissal.
Johnson did not have one of his better days and even Gareth Owen's passing was awry at times. Connolly always looked Rhyl's best hope for a goal at set pieces, but it was not to be.
Aber's keeper Roberts certainly saved the day for them.
RHYL: Kendall, Connolly, Stones, Horan, Strong, G Owen, Kelly (D Williams 83), Johnson, Roberts, Reed (C Owen 67), Jones.

Craig Jones (Rhyl)
Never stopped probing, looked the most likely to unlock Aber's defence. Worth a run in the side now.

I think you will find that the terrible referee with the eyesight problem was Padraig Sutton.

Dave Jones said:

Maybe I need an eyesight test too eh Taximan? I've changed it now after seeing it was Mr Sutton on Clwb Pel Droed. It actually said Carmelo Lo Faro on the matchsheet.

I missed the first 20 minutes. The next 40 minutes were very poor from Rhyl. I'm not sure at all about Aber's "blanket defence". Unlike other teams they did have a go during this period. Nor do I buy the theory that we were light in midfield. Kelly and Gareth Owen had plenty of the ball, but didn't today make very good use of it at all - tho they were not helped by below-par performances today from the strikers in front of them. Agree that Craig was our best player by a mile going forward. Kendall and the back 4 also very good. The final 30 minutes with just 10 men was much better than the preceding 40 minutes, and the team deserve great praise for that.

Excellent first 20 minutes, some lovely interpassing with 2/3 super saves from the Aber keeper. You arrived at a bad time Ioio, next 40 minute was disjointed, midfield's passing was below par and the two strikers contributed little. True once Roberts departed credit to the lads they battled well and Connolly's late overhead deserved better than an introduction to the woodwork! Credit to Aber they certainly tried to win the game but both sides suffered from some inconsistent refereeing. Two home matches on the trot we have witnessed in my opinion unacceptable officiating in my opinion.

I would like to offer my apologies to Jamie Reed because every time I see him play he seems to have a poor match. Perhaps if I stayed away it might be in the best interests of both Jamie and the team. Is it time to give Carl Owen an extended run in his place?
We seemed to play pretty well until we got to the last third of the pitch and poor Johnson found more dead ends than there are in an Agatha Christie novel.
As usual the back four and Kendall seemed to be able to contain the Aber threat fairly easily and there were not too many awkward moments.
I thought the referee had a very poor game and as Dave says in his report missed some glaring handball incidents but there can be no argument about the sending off - seemed that Roberts had a rush of blood to the head!
The upsides were, as usual, provided by Craig Jones and Mark Connolly as well as a refreshing brand of attractive football served up by the hosts courtesy of Alan Bickerstaff and his staff.

I agree with Rae, the style of football (albeit in patches) the Lilywhites are serving up this season is a joy to watch without any doubt, defence as usual 'rock solid' But for me the down side is twofold, firstly Johnson's final ball and his decision making in taking on 'one man two many' far to often, and secondly in my opinion Connolly's form is patchy, positional play when defending is suspect and forays forward usual result in crosses sailing towards Coronation Gardens or the main road. Granted he is capable of hitting the target from free kicks maybe 2 out of 10 attempts, and I did applaud his overhead attempt in the last minutes of Saturdays match, but all in all sorry Rae 'not good enough'

Bottom line, cards on the table, call a spade a spade....can you see the current Rhyl squad winning the Welsh Premier League title this season? Personally, while impressed with aspects of what I've seen so far, I have to say no. I fear there may be more Aberystwyth days than Llanelli days. Hope I'm wrong.

Toss,

Yeah, this squad is definitely good enough to win the WPL. Simple as mate!

JDH said:

Being good enough, and being consistent enough over the season are two different things. Good enough yes, consistent afraid not. Have to agree with Toss, unfortunately wheras the likes of TNS and Llanelli grind out the results match upon match week upon week regardless of opposition status, we are still along way from that as hard as that is to take guys we have to accept it!

I must admit that I'm not totally convinced either by Josh. Hopefully the reason he is being an almost automatic choice is to give him a chance to get an understanding with his team-mates, hopefully not because of any culture favouring "big" signings.

I think the criticism of Conno is unfair tho. We need the steel in the team. You must remember that the changes in team formation have affected him - moving from attacking midfield to RB, then sometimes having a winger in front of him and sometimes not. I think he works the flank well with Craig. Given my vantage point at games, I must admit tho that it's difficult to judge his defensive performance from 100 yards away !
