RESERVES ROBBED

By Dave Jones on Aug 17, 08 01:26 AM

BARMOUTH AND DYFFRYN 2 (Griffiths 28, Jones 67)
RHYL RESERVES 2 (Evans 61, Ahern 63)
WELSH ALLIANCE LEAGUE - AUG 16, 2008

IT should have been more than a point for Rhyl from this season's Welsh Alliance opener against newly-promoted Barmouth.
The Lilywhites started well, James Hay from the right playing in Joe Ahern whose low shot finished just wide.
Good hold up play from new signing Gareth Hughes saw him lay off to Hay who fired just over.
Rhyl were a constant threat and great skill from Jack Roberts set up Mike Roose whose left foot stinger on the turn rattled the crossbar.
Against the run of play Barmouth took a 28th minute lead when a long ball from the back released Bobby Griffiths who drove past Jamie Jones.
Just before the break Keiron Evans showed good strength to get past his man but the resultant shot was well saved, making it 1-0 at the turnaround.
After a good start to the second half Rhyl deservedly equalised on 61 minutes when Sean Morgan smartly found Keiron Evans who neatly chipped over the advancing keeper.
Two minutes later a tremendous pass from Hay picked out Ahern who cut inside and sent a low drive into the bottom corner to make it 2-1 to the Lilies.
The visitors were denied a blatant penalty when Jack Roberts played in Roose who was tackled from behind, but the referee somehow saw no offence.
Rhyl were attacking when a corner move broke down, Barmouth launched a counter and Shaun Jones was found in space to fire through the legs of Jamie Jones and make it 2-2 on 67 minutes.
Still Jon Stazicker's side refused to be denied and they went close to winning it when Ahern switched in from the right but saw his attempt smack the outside of the post.
Rhyl: Jamie Jones, Ben Bucknall, Tom Roberts, Adam France, Sean Morgan, Keiron Evans, James Hay, Jack Roberts, Joe Ahern, Gareth Hughes, Mike Roose. Subs: Sam Brewerton, Chris Evans, Owen Jones.

So what happened to all those of the first-team squad who were not in the starting 11 nor on the bench ? Why were they not in Barmouth ?

As always an excellent observation Ioio, as I've said before unfortunately there appears to be two football teams operating as Rhyl FC? Or is it a simple case of, if they turn out for the reserves the club has to pay them squad wages?

maybe as it was the first game the management wanted the whole 1st team sqaud at the home game??

Don't think it's the money - I'm guessing that any player on a contract will get paid whether or not they play (albeit some of it might be appearance-related). Whilst I can see that a first-team player who needs match practice might be asked to play for the reserves, what happens if a reserve team player is constantly axed to make way for a first-teamer? How long before they move somewhere else for regular football, thus reducing the squad available to the manager, possibly to a point where he can't raise a team? Not cut and dried, I'm afraid.

I agree, wages probably are paid on an appearance related basis, otherwise why on earth do Rhyl only ever field three players on the bench when the opposition field five?

Isn't the increase in the number of allowed substitutes (5 vs 3) something to do with having 2 "home-grown" (or whatever the phrase is) additional subs. However, as someone else pointed out, why have 2 on the bench if they aren't going to get a look-in? That said, I would strongly support having a reserve keeper on the bench. He may never get called on to play, although I have seen matches where the keeper is injured (and Tiny went in goal!) but it would keep him involved with the squad?

I believe the rule has changed from 2x Under 21s last season to 2x under 19s out of 5 this season ... or continue to go with 3

The advantage to the reserves of being able to progress by playing alongside first-team-squad members far outweighs the disadvantage of there being less places for them in the starting 11. By integrating, more of the reserves can make it thro the system. By keeping the 2 squads separate, yes the reserves will get more games but never progress.
