STRIKER OWEN SET TO SIGN

By Dave Jones on Jul 8, 08 12:43 PM

STRIKER Carl Owen has quit Porthmadog and is due to sign for Rhyl tonight, according to chairman of the Traeth club Phil Jones.
Owen, 28, has spent the past five seasons at Port, making 120 league appearances and scoring 47 goals.
Before that he had spells at Bangor City and Glantraeth. Owen is also a Welsh semi-pro international.
If Owen joins Rhyl he will be reunited with senior coach Allan Bickerstaff, who was assistant to Viv Williams at Porthmadog last season.
Port chairman Jones said Owen had expressed his intention to leave the Traeth and sign for the Lilywhites.
The Lilies are also believed to be running the rule over Airbus UK wing back Ryan Edwards.

If this is true then I fear its adios to Messrs Lloyd-Willams or Sharpe?

Not sure I can see the sense in this one.

Assuming Sharpy and Jiws are staying, and that Neil Roberts will play up front and not in midfield, it means we've got 5 strikers vying for 2 spots. And though he's a decent player I wouldn't say he's going to do anything that would radically improve our front line.

He's certainly no replacement for Hunty

I agree with Craig, where's this one going? from what I've seen of him, OK player but hardly a Hunt? We seem to be suddenly shopping at the £1 Shop and not Harrods! Is this just 'making up the numbers excercise' as in past seasons, with a few average players who will be gone by Christmas?

If Roberts takes a midfield berth, then it's feasible the other 4 strikers could rotate. In all probability it signals the departure of Jiws and/or Sharp. Would be sad to see Sharp in Bangor blue, but these things happen. Heard we were keen on someone at Droylesden (recommended by Kelly) and a player "dropping 5 leagues" (this may have been Llewelyn).

Kendo.
Conno. O'Neill. Horan. Chris Roberts.
Craig Jones. N Roberts. G Owen. Kelly.
Reed. Sharp.

Subs:
Wilson
Stones
Jiws
Holt
C Owen.

If the personnel remains the same. Like to see this line-up against Newtown.

We already have the replacement for Hunt - and that's Sharpy and no way do we lose him.

As to that proposed line-up , I reckon that Gareth Owen/Kelly is an either/or. No way will they both play most games, and its difficult to imagine a 70+year-old midfield duo. Willo staked his claim against Bohemian, not just to a midfield spot but also to the captaincy.

JDH said:

Which ever way you look at this one, perm any two from three, Wilson, Kelly or Owen you still end up with a 70+ central midfield, hardly progressive thinking on behalf of the management more of a 'shore things up and get us through the season' maybe? Please, please not Wlson as captain, no leadership qualities, plenty of effort but no direction, captaincy has to stay with Horan or maybe Roberts as an outside bet?

If fit surely Stones will be one of the first names on the teamsheet??

stones seemed to disappear in the second half of the games i saw last season. his confidnece must have taken a hell of a knock having left the wpl cos he thought he was too good for it, only to find himself back where he started. im not knocking him & agree jon, if he can find some form he's a definite for the starting eleven. i rate gaz wilson, ok he often couple of yards off the pace, but this is the wpl not la liga!

Keys to captaincy on the pitch are communication and motivation - actual footballing tactics are presumably decided in advance by management. In the games against Bohemian, Willo showed himself to be best suited for the role.

i have a feeling we haven't seen the end of the signings, so there will be the inevitable raft of departures. it was heartening to read rhyl offered reed better terms than tns (maybe rhyl just rate him more?). there's also the possibility of the loan card once the season kicks off.

JDH said:

We all seem pre-occupied and almost fanatical about Rhyl's midfield and forward line, but what about the rearguard? Inadequacies were very evident against Bohemians and I am sure will be again against the likes of Llanelli and New Saints during the coming season. We need quality cover for Kendall, an attacking right wing back (please don't 'waste' Connally's talents there), another centre back (unless Stones slot in here?)and finally cover for Chris Roberts on the left.

Have a look at the two reserves centre backs, they must be good enough for cover surely
