PLAYER RELEASES IMMINENT...
WITHIN the next week or so Rhyl's management team will decide which players are to make up their final squad for the 2008/09 season.
Allowing for the addition of a reserve goalkeeper the Lilywhites currently have a 19-man pool which will need trimming before the start of the campaign. That is likely to mean the departure of some established names, especially if more signings are on the way.
Speaking on Saturday after the Lilies' first victory of the post-Europe pre-season over a Wolves side containing three first team players, senior coach Allan Bickerstaff said difficult decisions will soon have to be made.
"It doesn't take a genius to work out we'll have some players who are surplus to requirements and we'll announce in the next week or two who they are," he added.
"The main thing is we want to be organised for when the season starts; we want everyone gelling as a team.
"We've not made wholesale changes this summer, but there are some new faces.
"Jimmy Kelly is like a new signing now coming back after injury and if you look down the middle at him, Neil Roberts, Gareth Owen and Matthew Williams you've got the spine of the team."
Bickerstaff was delighted with Saturday's result against a Wanderers outfit made up largely of reserve and academy players but also including Hungarian international midfielder Denes Rosa, Republic of Ireland cap Stephen Gleeson and Elliott Bennett, who had a stint at Bury last term.
Defender John Dunleavey headed the visitors in front after just four minutes, but Carl Owen equalised after 31 and Paul O'Neill nodded in the winner on 88.
"We've been stepping up the intensity in training and are looking for that in matches now," added the senior coach.
"We didn't have the best of starts; Lee Kendall was blocked off for the corner, which was clever on their part, and they scored with a free header which was disappointing, but we recovered well.
"We want them to play through the midfield, we've got the players who can do that, and we put together some good passing phases at times.
"Results in friendlies are not the be all and end all but today was the first time we'd scored in pre-season (since Europe) and it's important to establish winning ways.
"I was pleased with the back four; Greg Strong has settled in well, both on and off the field."
And what of Josh Johnson, the Trinidadian who was at Wrexham last season and played over three-quarters of the game against Wolves?
"Josh did well but we'll need another look at him before deciding anything," Bickerstaff added.

Well here for your deliberation is JDH's squad and players released, might suprise a few people (players included)
RHYL SQUAD
Goalkeeper:
Lee Kendall
Defenders:
Chris Roberts
Paul O'Neill
Greg Strong
George Horan
Mark Connolly
Greg Stones
Midfield:
Gareth Owen
Jimmy Kelly (Captain)
Craig Jones
Gareth Wilson
Forwards:
Neil Roberts
Matthew Williams
Jamie Reed
Carl Owen
Michael White (Assuming he will sign)
Released:
Craig Garside
Chris Sharp
Mark Lloyd Williams
Thats a current squad of 16 players which allows the signing of a reserve keeper, a right wing back and one other midfielder, possibly to play wide left?
I think I'd agree with that, though I'd would rather keep Sharpy and send Carl Owen back to Port, but given that Owen has signed a 1 year deal don't see that happening
Prefer to kee sharpy and let white go....
i think sharpy is going.
if that squad aint good enough to win the title, then i'm a german...verwenden sie die vier beim entfernen bildschrim zur hochsten!
the gulf between the top 3 (+ maybe them from down the A55) and the rest i fear is going to lengthen.
Wob, don't forget that the 2 teams we have to catch up are still full time. They train together everyday not 3 hours a week. It makes a big difference.
Only 1 part time team has ever won this league against full time opposition
Fair comment Craig.
I think the decision of Reed to choose Rhyl over TNS was symbolic. We can now compete with them financially and also offer something to the better players who are not wholly concerend in playing full time (i.e, N Roberts and Matt Williams).
In an ideal world, would love to see Rhyl go full time, but it must be a hell of a financial committment / outlay.
Looks like White has made his decision.
Reeds decision was symbolic aye, he signed for the cash.
TNS dont pay £650 full time like Roberts is getting part time, not to mention a whopping sign on fee.
you missed my point realist.
i'm not naive enough to think they signed for rhyl for the seaside air or due to happy memories of surfing in the sun centre. we can conjecture as to the exact £££ involved until the cows come home, but it's the fact that we CAN compete financially with TNS. Maybe one day the finanaces will dry up, but let's enjoy it whilst we can!
And the difference is Wob, if Rhyl are successful and playing good football there'll be crowds of 700+ regularly coming through the gate not the 200 who still turn up for TNS
