STUDENTS TEACH RHYL A LESSON IN FINISHING
RHYL 1 (Lloyd Williams 52)
ENGLISH COLLEGES 4 (Taylor 47, 70, 76, 83)
WATCHING Bohemian manager Pat Fenlon must have been rubbing his hands with glee at the defensive calamities his Intertoto Cup opponents produced in tonight's friendly at Belle Vue.
Rhyl were sunk by one man - English Colleges striker Aaron Taylor who has just signed a professional contact with Football League Two club Morecambe and showed why as he netted all four goals, but he was assisted by woeful Lilywhites defending.
Fielding what could well be the starting line-up for Dublin on Saturday minus goalkeeper Lee Kendall, Rhyl produced patches of good play but generally looked very rusty.
In a poor first half, Chris Roberts should have opened the scoring on 15 minutes but put a free header over the bar from a Craig Jones cross.
James Brewerton was denied from point blank range by Colleges keeper Scott Drury, then Roberts had a shot cleared off the line.
Marc Lloyd Williams looked certain to score from a Jones centre but his effort was deflected wide for a corner. From the resulting delivery, Lloyd Williams' overhead kick clipped the top of the bar.
The Colleges had their chances too. Taylor was clean through but finished second in a race to the ball with home keeper John Gann when the Morecambe lad should have done better.
The outstanding Sam Mensah failed to test Gann from eight yards and Taylor shot weakly wide. At this stage the visitors appeared to have nothing to offer in attack.
Two minutes into the second half, however, English Colleges made no mistake. A dreadful header by Gareth Wilson put Taylor clear and he slotted comfortably past Gann.
Rhyl levelled five minutes later when Craig Garside's shot ballooned up off a defender and Lloyd Williams headed over Drury into the net.
Mark Connolly curled a 30-yarder just wide and Lloyd Williams rounded Drury but his effort was blocked on the line by Michael Jacklin - surely a Rhyl win was on the cards.
But then Taylor, who had been taken off but came back on as a substitute, turned the match on its head.
Michael Bailey's low cross from the right picked out Taylor with no defender near him and within a flash it was 2-1.
Six minutes later Taylor showed true class when he received the ball down the right, used electric pace to outspeed the Rhyl cover and lashed in from an acute angle.
The Lilies should have grabbed one back when Brewerton picked out Jones who neatly lobbed a defender but his volley with the goal at his mercy was too weak.
And the hosts paid for their wastefulness seven minutes from time when another terrible back header left Taylor with the simplest of tasks to make it 4-1.
RHYL: Gann, O'Neill (Holt 71), Brewerton, Connolly, Ruffer, Horan, Jones, Wilson, Garside (Kelly 58), Lloyd Williams, Roberts (Holsgrove 71). Unused subs: T Roberts, McMahon, Roose.
