STEPHENS RETURNS TO HAUNT RHYL

WELSHPOOL TOWN 1 (Stephens 81)

WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE

A LATE goal from former Lilywhite Ross Stephens condemned Rhyl to their first league defeat in eight games against a spirited Welshpool Town at Maesydre.
But with better finishing and a touch of luck the Lilies could and should have returned home from what is becoming a bogey ground with the points in the bag.

It was another lucky day, however, for John Hulse's men as European chasers Bangor andCarmarthen also dropped valuable points.
Both teams worked hard in the first half against some blustery conditions at Maesydre but itwas Rhyl who carved out the best chances.
Greg Stones' header went close before Lee Hunt’s chase and chip cannoned off the Welshpool bar.
The visitors created enough opportunities in the second half to win any game before Pool secured the win with a cracker from Stephens.
Firstly home defender Paul Dowridge nearly gifted Rhyl the lead when he headed Mark Connolly’s free-kick onto his crossbar under pressure from Hunt with keeper McGuigan flapping.
Then Craig Jones volleyed agonisingly wide in the box. Hunt’s determination created another chance for Jones as he robbed Ross Jefferies on the edge of the box; he then squared for Lloyd-Williams whose pinpoint cross was headed wide by Jones in the six-yard box with McGuigan stranded.
Lloyd-Williams' header then tested MvGuigan’s handling from a Connolly free-kick as Rhyl surged forward to find the winner.
Welshpool remained a threat on the breakaway as Steve Rogers and Stephens both went close.
But it was ex-Rhyl midfielder Stephens who grabbed the headlines, firing home from the edge of the box on 81 minutes with a screamer which was too good even for Lee Kendall.
Rhyl captain George Horan nearly salvaged a point in the dying seconds when his bullet header from StuartGraves' corner was cleared off the line.
Rhyl: Kendall, Wilson (Sharp 72), Graves, Connolly, Horan, Ruffer, Jones, Stones, Hunt, Lloyd-Williams, White. Unused: Garside, O'Neill. Att: 301.
