ALL TO PLAY FOR AT FARRAR ROAD

By Dave Jones on Jan 29, 08 10:17 PM

RHYL 1 (Hunt 54)
BANGOR CITY 1 (Walsh 84)
LEAGUE CUP SEMI-FINAL FIRST LEG
THERE was no separating these great rivals after 90 exhilarating minutes at Belle Vue tonight.
A draw was a fair result as although Rhyl looked to have the game under control after they took the lead nine minutes into the second half, City battled back strongly and their late pressure eventually paid off.

A fiesty cup clash featured six yellow cards, a multi-player scuffle and plenty of lively banter between the fans and respective benches.
The result means Rhyl are now unbeaten in 13 League Cup matches against Bangor, but Nev Powell's side are probably the happier of the two teams being level in the tie going into the second leg at Farrar Road on February 12.
If tonight's game needed igniting it certainly came to life in the ninth minute when Rhyl striker Lee Hunt went in late on Bangor keeper Paul Smith, evoking memories of a similar incident between the two back in November when the Rhyl striker was sent off at Belle Vue.
Both teams had close calls early on, Bangor's Sion Edwards hitting a left-foot screamer just over while Lilywhites midfielder Mark Connolly narrowly cleared the bar with a free-kick.
On 32 minutes Craig Jones' on-target shot for the home team hit Hunt and the ball deflected over the top.
In the 40th minute Jones let fly from 25 yards and Smith produced a fine tip over. Hunt also had a volley kept out by the City custodian, while at the other end Christian Seargeant beat five men in a dazzling run only to see his shot heroically blocked by Matthew Holt.
Early in the second half City top scorer Ashley Stott went desperately close to touching home from close range but soon after Rhyl took the lead.
Michael White won a free-kick on the left which Connolly took, the Bangor defence only partially cleared and Hunt headed in his 19th goal of the season.
Hunt could have had another when he got on the end of a Jones cross, but the ball ballooned over.
The last 20 minutes saw Bangor really have a go at the home defence. Rhyl began to get pushed back and were increasingly reliant on the long-ball counter.
In the 71st minute Michael Walsh was only denied by the legs of Lee Kendall and Lee Webber's follow-up rocket was bravely buffered by Carl Ruffer.
Still, Rhyl looked to be holding on fairly comfortably until on 84 minutes Seargeant's slide rule pass into the box picked out Walsh who turned sharply and buried into the bottom corner.
That was the end of the scoring and now it is all to play for at Farrar Road in two weeks' time.
RHYL:
Lee Kendall: Only one save to make apart from the goal - 7.
Matthew Holt: One of his finest games for Rhyl, put his body on the line time and again - 9 (MOM)
Chris Roberts: Was never found wanting against Bangor's lively forwards - 8.
Mark Connolly: As always an attacking threat and worked like a Trojan in midfield - 8.
George Horan: Self-assured as always, tremendous in the air - 8.
Carl Ruffer: His calmness and knowhow at the back saved Rhyl many times - 8.
Craig Jones: Some great runs at the Bangor defence, unlucky not to score - 8.
Greg Stones: Ball skills shone in a frantic derby, gave City plenty to think about - 8.
Lee Hunt: Kept up his great scoring record against Bangor, never stopped working up front - 8.
Dave Cameron (replaced by Sharp 77): Made nuisance of himself in the air but was off the pace at times - 7.
Michael White: Tested the Bangor defence all evening with his pace and trickery. Growing in confidence and deserves a run now - 8.

Those figures are way too generous. You make it sound like they all played superbly. Apart from the 2 centre halves and maybe Matty Holt and Lee the rest were pretty non descript.

The wide players barely received a decent pass, the 2 lads in midfield were by passed all night and exerted hardly any influence on the game at all and Robbo was lucky to stay on the pitch.

bangor, as much as it pains me to say it deserved to win and but George,Ruffs and Holty they probably would have

Dave replies:
Thanks Craig, constructive comments as always.
As I've said before people often see things differently and performance marks are always a matter of opinion, there isn't really a right or wrong.
Comments about the blog and what I write, be they good or bad, are always welcome and I'm big enough to take the knocks as well as the praise.
Looking back, I did write that report straight after the game and perhaps in hindsight, and with a bit more thought, I may have marked one or two differently.
