COOKSON CUP ROUND TWO
FIVE second half goals ensured Rhyl coasted into the Cookson Cup semi-finals but yesterday's tie at Belle Vue was not as straightforward as the scoreline suggests.
Visitors Conwy more than held their own in the first 45 minutes and could have gone in ahead at the interval but for excellent defending from the likes of Tom Roberts and Vince France.
The normally deadly Lilywhites striker Mike Roose was not at his best in front of goal and chances which fell to Mitchell Booth and Jack Roberts were not taken.
Rhyl began the second half on the attack and only a fine save from Musselmen keeper Jamie Roberts thwarted Andy Booker inside the first minute.
Finally, on 51 minutes the deadlock was broken when a Scott Millington throw-in was headed clear but Sam Brewerton set up Booker to volley home from the edge of the box.
Goal number two arrived in the 65th minute when a Jack Roberts cross was nodded away by Chris Quinn but Roose's firm connection found the net.
Roberts produced a great stop from Booth before on 70 minutes Millington's cross was met by Booker who beat a defender and slotted home.
Booth struck the fourth when he dummied cleverly from a John Jones cross and steered beyond Roberts.
John Gann, in his first game back after a long injury lay-off reminded everyone of his talents with a brilliant save from substitute Callum Vernon before Booker completed his hat trick in the 90th minute.
RHYL: Gann, Ahern, Millington, France, T Roberts, Brewerton (Jones 74), J Roberts (Morgan 74), Booth, Booker, Roose, Williams. Att: 75.
