CRACKING WIN FOR RESERVES
RHYL RESERVES 3 (Booker 2, France 69, T Roberts 85)
LLANRUG UNITED 0
LESS than 48 hours after losing at Conwy United, Rhyl bounced back in style with a fine win over a very capable Llanrug side at Belle Vue today.
The Lilywhites were boosted by the inclusion of first team squad regulars Craig Garside and Michael White, but the star of the show was goalkeeper Jamie Jones, who saved a penalty and made numerous other fine stops in this exciting contest.
Things could not have started better for the home team as they took a second minute lead when in-form Andy Booker scored with a close range diving header from a Scott Millington free-kick.
Millington was soon starring at the other end when he cleared a Martin Bohana header off the goal-line.
Rhyl keeper Jones made a great save from a Gareth Griffiths 20-yarder, then Lilies wide man White's cross shot clipped the top of the bar.
Around the hour mark home custodian Jones had a magical two minutes which earned him the man of the match award.
First, Jones acrobatically tipped a Christian Jarvis effort over. From the resulting corner, Ceirion Williams headed against the post, but as Rhyl attempted to clear a penalty was awarded for handball against Adam France.
Griffiths took the kick, but not only did Jones keep it out, diving to his right, he also heroically saved the fierce follow-up strike from Williams.
Llanrug keeper Dave Ball did well to beat away a powerful Mitchell Booth hit, but on 69 minutes the hosts made it 2-0.
White's corner from the left was brilliantly flicked goalwards by France and the ball found the net despite a defender's bid on the line to keep it out.
Jones was the hero again when Richard Evans raced into the box, but the Rhyl glove wearer managed to tip the ball past the post.
When Bohana hit the woodwork from point blank range it was obvious it was not Llanrug's day.
And Rhyl showed them how to finish on 85 minutes when another White corner was met by Mike Roose and defender Tom Roberts forced the ball home.
With Glan Conwy surprisingly losing at home to Conwy United, Rhyl's hold on second place was strengthened.
Rhyl Reserves: Jamie Jones, Joe Ahern, Scott Millington, Adam France, Tom Roberts, Craig Garside (Alec Williams 60), Sean Morgan, Mitchell Booth, Andy Booker, Mike Roose, Michael White. Unused sub: Sam Brewerton. Att: 50.
