LILYWHITES AWAIT THE MINNOWS

By Dave Jones on Oct 1, 07 11:07 PM

RHYL v MONTGOMERY TOWN
WELSH CUP ROUND TWO
SATURDAY 2.30pm
RHYL were twice victims of cup giant-killings last season but surely there will be no slip-ups on Saturday when Montgomeryshire League Division Two outfit Montgomery Town visit Belle Vue.
Last term the Lilywhites crashed out of the Welsh Cup at Welsh League Ton Pentre and exited the North Wales Coast Challenge Cup at Cymru Alliance Prestatyn Town, but Montgomery are some way below the standard of those two shock conquerors.

Montgomeryshire League Division Two is roughly the same level as Clwyd League Division One. Therefore this weekend's tie is equivalent to Rhyl being drawn against Brynford United.
But Montgomery most certainly deserve respect. Already in this season's Welsh Cup they have knocked out two Mid-Wales League sides (equivalent to the Welsh Alliance) in Llanidloes and Llanfyllin.
Their danger man is without a doubt Tony Meredith, who had banged in 13 goals in his first eight starts up to last Friday.
Montgomery are managed by ex-Welshpool Town boss Clive McNamee, while their goalkeeper is former 'Pool and Newtown custodian Steve Goodwin.
"I've had them watched," said Rhyl boss John Hulse. "This will be a massive game for them and they'll come to Belle Vue and give it their all.
"It's a big game for us too as the Welsh Cup is a route into Europe, it's the biggest cup available in Wales to win. We'll treat Montgomery with the same respect as we would playing a team from our own league."
Rhyl have won the Welsh Cup four times, their most recent success coming in 2006.
Hulse should have a full squad to choose from on Saturday with midfielder Craig Garside in contention to return after a hamstring injury, although the manager insisted no risks would be taken with the ex-Everton youth player.
