HUNT'S LATE HEADER SETTLES DIRE GAME

THE only good thing about this game from a Rhyl fans point of view was the result.
Needing just a point to qualify for the League Cup quarter-finals as group winners, substitute Lee Hunt's 80th minute header secured victory for the Lilywhites in what was a very poor encounter at the Deeside Stadium on Tuesday.

Fielding a much-changed side which included starts for Chris Sharp and Michael White, Rhyl struggled from the start to find any rhythm.
Nomads could have scored a couple of early goals, Lee Kendall having to tip a Chris Herbert effort over the bar before John McAllister was put clean through, but the Lilies custodian blocked with his legs.
White made a good run at the Nomads defence but was tackled just as he was about to shoot, then Craig Garside had a good opportunity from a Dave Cameron lay-off, but the ex-Nomads man blasted well over.
It seemed the only way Rhyl might get a shot on target was to win a penalty and they got their chance on 28 minutes.
A weak free-kick from Chris Roberts looked to pose no threat, but the ball struck Ben Alston on the hand just inside the box and referee Rob Duncan pointed to the spot.
With regular penalty taker Andy Moran rested, Gareth Wilson stepped up to fire confidently past keeper Paul Forester.
Nomads continued to press and only a last-gasp clearance by Carl Ruffer denied them a certain golden opportunity.
In the second half Rhyl did improve, John Hulse's men doing most of the pressing although the game continued to be strewn with errors.
On 47 minutes Mark Connolly sent in a great cross from the right but Garside maintained his long record of misses by heading over.
It was against the run of play when in the 63rd minute Quay were given a penalty for an alleged handball and Mark Cadwallader coolly made it 1-1.
Back came Rhyl, and a White through ball released Stuart Graves, who rounded the keeper but from a tight angle chipped into the area and Sharp was unable to direct his header at the target.
The increasingly prominent White then skinned a Nomads defender down the right, burst into the box and drove hard into the six-yard area, almost prompting an own goal.
Hunt came on for Sharp on 77 minutes and within three minutes of his arrival he plundered the winner.
Roberts fed a free-kick from the right towards the back post and Hunt headed in his ninth goal of the season.
Three minutes from time Cadwallader committed an horrendous foul on Hunt which deservedly earned the Nomads defender a red card. Thankfully, Hunt appeared to recover well from the disgraceful tackle.
Perhaps the most entertaining fayre at the Deeside Stadium was the banter between the two sets of fans, with for once the Rhyl contingent getting a run for their money in the singing stakes.
Rhyl now advance to the regionalised quarter finals along with fellow north sides Llangefni Town, Bangor City and The New Saints.
RHYL: Kendall, White, Roberts, Connolly, Holt, Ruffer, Wilson, Garside, Sharp (Hunt 77), Cameron, Graves. Subs not used: Powell, Booth.
