DRUIDS DESTROYED BY RAMPANT RHYL
NEWI CEFN DRUIDS 1 (Lewis 90)
RHYL 4 (Connolly 31, O'Neill 65, Moran 67, Sharp 90)
AFTER disappointing results against TNS and Welshpool, a big performance was needed from Rhyl tonight - and they delivered it!
The Lilywhites edged up to third in the Welsh Premier with an emphatic victory at Plaskynaston Lane against a Druids side which were not in the same class.
Rhyl were weakened by the absence of midfield maestro Jimmy Kelly, who needs a knee operation, and defensive colossus Carl Ruffer, who pulled out through illness, as well as Craig Jones, injured in training during the week.
In came Matty Holt, who was outstanding in defence, while Chris Sharp and Michael White both made fleeting appearances from the substitute's bench.
Before the kick-off there was a guard of honour and presentation for Druids centre-back Timmy Edwards, who recently reached 400 WPL games - over half of them in a Rhyl shirt.
But it was not to be Edwards' night, or an evening to remember for his fellow defenders, who contributed to their own downfall with a series of crucial errors. On this performance, it is hard to fathom out how Druids defeated TNS in their opening game.
There was an early inconvenience for Rhyl when captain and centre-half George Horan was yellow carded after just six minutes for a foul on Darren Williams as the Cefn striker looked to break clear on goal.
The visitors were applying most of the pressure, Andy Moran chipping off target from an acute angle, then driving tantalisingly across the face of goal, but no-one could get a touch.
Craig Garside's powerful left-footer was well held by home keeper Carl Edwards, then Druids broke, ex-Rhyl striker Chris McGinn racing in on goal, but he dragged his shot wide.
The Lilies went desperately close on 26 minutes when Edwards pushed Chris Roberts' drive on to a post, then bravely smothered Moran's follow-up.
An away goal was on the cards and it arrived in the 31st minute. Stuart Graves was fouled on the left and Mark Connolly bent a tremendous Beckhamesque 30-yard free-kick beyond the wall and dive of Edwards.
Lee Kendall's only serious action of the night came just before the break when he had to be alert to tip a Paul Mazzarella cross over the bar.
McGinn's had an opportunity to equalise on the hour when he latched on to a wayward Horan header, but his 20-yard drive skidded wide.
On 65 minutes the visitors made it 2-0 when Connolly's corner from the left was volleyed in by defender Paul O'Neill.
Two minutes later it was all over when Lee Hunt's touch from a Roberts delivery wrongfooted the Cefn backs and with keeper Edwards stranded too, Moran had the simplest of tasks to find the empty net and record his 11th goal this season.
It could have been 4-0 when Garside's back header from a Graves cross was cleared off the line.
Druids finally began to threaten in the last five minutes, substitute Mike Heverin steering wide after good work from fellow replacement Khosrow Hematinafar.
Three quick Rhyl changes saw Dave Cameron come on for Hunt, Sharp replace the injured Moran and White made his first team debut in the 89th minute, swapping places with Horan.
In the 90th minute the Ancients grabbed a consolation when Waynne Phillips' free-kick to the back post was finished off by an unmarked Geraint Lewis.
However, three minutes into injury time Rhyl fittingly had the last word when Sharp latched on to a dreadful back-pass, cheekily dummied the advancing Edwards and slotted into the gaping goal.
RHYL: Kendall 7, O'Neill 8, Roberts 8, CONNOLLY 9, Horan 7 (White 89), Holt 8, Wilson 8, Garside 8, Hunt 7 (Cameron 85), Moran 8 (Sharp 86), Graves 8.
