CONCERN OVER KELLY AND BREWIE

By Dave Jones on Oct 25, 07 07:05 PM

JOHN Hulse admits he is concerned over the long-term future of midfielder Jimmy Kelly after the ex-Chester City and Wrexham schemer was again unable to complete 90 minutes on Saturday.
The 34-year-old was substituted in the 69th minute of a disappointing home draw with Welshpool when a knee injury sustained in a pre-season friendly again flared up.

"His studs got caught in the ground at Mynydd Isa (on July 10) which jarred his knee and we think the bone is rubbing against the ligament, so it probably needs 'filing down' so to speak," said Hulse.
"He's been very brave to carry on playing, but it's got to a stage now where he's in agony for a day or two after games and it all takes its toll. Jimmy's been a pro all his career, but he's not been able to even train properly which frustrates him as he loves training."
Hulse said it is likely Kelly will have a minor operation on November 1 which will rule him out for at least two to three weeks.
"After that we'll have to sit back and assess his future," he added. "He's a great character who loves his football and is one of the best players in his position in the league, but he's been playing through the pain barrier and that can't carry on."
Kelly joined the Lilywhites in the summer and his outstanding midfield skills have been a major factor in the team's best results, especially in the 3-1 home UEFA Cup victory over FC Haka of Finland.
Hulse was unsure whether Kelly would be in contention for this Friday's trip to NEWI Cefn Druids, adding: "At this moment I'd have to say no, but we'll see how things go in the week."
There is also worry over central defender and local lad James Brewerton, 27, who has hardly featured for the first team this season because of a knee injury.
"He tried to make a comeback last month with the reserves but broke down," added Hulse. "The injury is not healing as we'd hoped, he can manage the running side of things, but when it comes to turning quickly he's having problems. Brewie is as honest as the day is long and is very highly thought of at the club, but his slow recovery is a concern."
Meanwhile, striker Phil Coffin, who has made just one substitute appearance for the first team, has joined Cymru Alliance club GAP Queens Park, along with ex-Rhyl midfielder Ricky Evans.
