WHITFIELD SIGNS FOR CAMMELL LAIRD
RHYL'S former Wales Under-21 international goalkeeper Paul Whitfield has signed for Unibond League Division One South club Cammell Laird.
It means Whitty, 25, is reunited with John Hulse's former assistant Neil Young at Kirklands Stadium, as well as ex-Lilywhites team mates Carl Clampitt, Lee Atherton and Chris Taylor.
However, it is understood part of the deal involves Whitfield joining former club Airbus UK Broughton in January.
A former Wrexham trainee, Whitfield saw Welsh Premier experience with Connah's Quay Nomads, Newtown, Bangor City and Airbus, before joining Rhyl in October 2005.
He spent two seasons at Belle Vue making 26 first team league appearances.
An unfortunate injury suffered in a North Wales Challenge Cup tie against Colwyn Bay in 2006 meant Whitfield lost his first team place to John Gann.
Although he remained at Rhyl, first team opportunities were limited and Lee Kendall's arrival last month meant Whitfield, who was not on a contract, became third choice.
"I wish Paul all the best," said Rhyl manager John Hulse. "He never let anyone down, but it simply wasn't viable to keep three keepers at the club."
