RESERVES INTO NEXT ROUND
PWLLHELI 1 (Bratt 70)
RHYL RESERVES 2 (Booth 44, Roose 66)
FOR the second time this season Rhyl ran out winners at Recreation Road but they were made to fight all the way before progressing to the second round of the Cookson Cup.
As has often been the case of late, the Lilywhites started slowly and Pwllheli had good opportunities, but shots from Dylan Thomas and Chris Griffiths did not bother visiting keeper John Gann.
The first half was mainly a midfield battle, but a minute before the break a headed clearance fell to Rhyl's Mitchell Booth who beat keeper Andrew Parry all ends up with a 20-yard wonder strike.
Moments later Phil Coffin had a great chance to put Mike Roose in on goal, but he opted to shoot instead and stubbed his foot in doing so, ensuring the striker did not appear for the second half because of a twisted ankle.
Within two minutes of the restart Pwllheli's Darren Garlick found himself in space and clattered the crossbar with a fine shot.
This was a wake-up call for Rhyl who steadied themselves and dominated the next 20 minutes with some neat football.
Midway through the half, good strength in the middle by Tom Roberts saw him release Roose who finished well with his right foot.
It could have been three when a pinpoint cross was sent in by Alec Williams, but Michael White headed straight at Parry. Tom Roberts then let rip from 22 yards but Parry produced a superb save.
Pwllheli were not finished, though, and on 70 minutes a David Farr shot went in off the knee of Paul Bratt.
The hosts piled on the pressure, but Rhyl held firm and they could have wrapped it up five minutes from time when Roose met a free-kick on the volley but his effort flashed just wide.
RHYL TEAM: Gann, Ahern, Millington, France, Roberts, Williams, White, Booth, Sharp, Roose, Coffin. Subs: Morgan, Brewerton.
