LILIES MAKE HEAVY WEATHER OF IT

By Dave Jones on Sep 28, 07 10:18 PM

RHYL 2 (Moran 7, 84 pen)
AIRBUS UK BROUGHTON 1 (McIntosh 38)
ON Tuesday Rhyl won pretty - tonight they won ugly.
The Lilywhites needed an 84th minute penalty from Andy Moran to see off 10-man Airbus, who also lost their goalkeeper and had to play with a stand-in for the last half-hour.

It all started well for the Lilies when on seven minutes James Kelly played a quick free-kick into Moran who finished clinically 10 yards out.
The challenges were flying in from the first whistle and Airbus defender Steve Hopkins was lucky to stay on the park when he clattered Paul O'Neill by the touchline.
In the 12th minute the visitors went close when James McIntosh hit a first-time left footer which Lee Kendall did well to push away.
Gareth Wilson's 30-yarder was beaten out by Wingmakers keeper Andy Hughes, but no Rhyl player was near enough to latch on to the loose ball.
Airbus then had a good spell, Hopkins lashing over from 20 yards, then Gareth Owen and Darren Wright linked smartly but Carl Ruffer produced a great block.
The warning signs were there, and on 38 minutes the home defence failed to clear its lines and McIntosh volleyed in from 15 yards.
Craig Jones' 25-yard thunderbolt cleared the bar by inches, but come the interval it was 1-1.
Three minutes into the second-half Airbus were reduced to 10 when Hopkins was red carded for a dreadful tackle on George Horan - he could have no complaints.
Rhyl should have taken the lead in the 51st minute when Hughes could only palm a Jones cross into the path of Stuart Graves who connected poorly with his right foot and the danger ceased.
A lovely ball from Moran put Jones in on goal, but from a slight angle the young speed merchant drove wide.
Just past the hour visitors keeper Hughes was left spark out after a collision with Jones and had to be stretchered off with a head injury. McIntosh took over between the sticks.
For all their advantage, the Lilies were struggling to create clear chances. On 75 minutes substitute Dave Cameron should have done better from eight yards but his weak header failed to overly trouble McIntosh.
Lee Hunt was lucky to stay on the park when he launched himself at McIntosh chasing a through ball, but the Rhyl striker did not even get a booking.
To add insult to injury, Hunt earned the penalty which secured the hosts the points. Horan did well to break up an Airbus attack, strode forward and threaded a great ball to Hunt who nicked it past the advancing McIntosh but then went down. There appeared to be minimal contact but referee Neil Bayliss pointed to the spot.
Moran fired home to the keeper's right to notch his sixth goal in five starts.
Airbus bravely pushed for an equaliser and Rhyl were indebted to Jones for a desperate clearance in injury time when Wright fed a tantalising ball into the six-yard box.
RHYL TEAM (with performance marks);
Lee Kendall 7, Craig Jones 8, Chris Roberts 7, Paul O'Neill 7 (Mark Connolly 54 - 6), George Horan 8, Carl Ruffer 8, Gareth Wilson 7, James Kelly 7, Lee Hunt 7, ANDY MORAN 9, Stuart Graves 7 (Dave Cameron 68 - 5).
Attendance: 504.

Good honest report, but a bit generous on the marks there Dave following that second-half display..not a single serious shot last 30 minutes against virtually 9-men airbus. I'd have given
Kendall 7,JONES 7,Roberts 4,O'Neill 5,(Conno 5),Horan 6,Ruffer 6,Willo 6,Kelly 6,Hunt 6,Moran 7,Graves 6,(Cammy 4).
I'd have asked for my money back except
1) It goes to a good cause, and
2) I didn't pay anyway as I arrived at half-time - I did offer tho !

Dave replies:
I'd never make a judge on X-Factor would I, far too generous.
