UEFA CUP SECOND QUALIFYING ROUND SECOND LEG
(Aggregate 3-3 - Haka win on away goals)
RHYL suffered a heartbreaking exit from the UEFA Cup at the Tehtaan Kentta stadium this evening.
Leading 3-1 from the first-leg, the Lilywhites held FC Haka for an hour in the return, but two goals in two minutes was enough to put the Finns through to the next stage.
It was backs to the wall in the opening half as Haka piled on the pressure, but Rhyl defended resolutely with man of the match Carl Ruffer absolutely outstanding, and come the interval it was 0-0. The nearest the Valkeakoski outfit came was when Mark Connolly headed off the line.
With the hour mark passed, Rhyl fans were dreaming of a second UEFA Cup tie victory in three seasons, but then it all went wrong.
On 63 minutes, Mikko Innanen netted with a long-range screamer, then two minutes later Haka's record goalscorer Valeri Popovitch toe-poked home past a static John Gann.
One goal would have been enough to send Rhyl through and there was a decent chance for Andy Moran near the end but he failed to get enough purchase on the ball.
Try as they did, there was no way back for Rhyl and their European adventure is over for another year - but what an heroic effort it was.
That 3-1 first-leg victory at Belle Vue will never be forgotten and their close season performances augur well for the campaign ahead in the Welsh Premier.

Hard luck Rhyl but you did the town proud. Hulsey's boys should be thrilled with the first leg performance alone which was one of the best displays I've seen from a WPL team. You'll be back next year, probably in the Champions League. Heads up and battle on boys!
Despite the aggregate defeat you did the town of Rhyl proud. Your all heroes to us loyal Rhyl fans, we all appreciate your great efforts. Hold your heads up high, and focuss on your great team performances over the pre-season so far. For season 2007/08, it's time to show Wales who is the best team in the Welsh Premier. Next season, why no a crack at the Champions League. C'mon you whites..... :-)
