MARK POWELL - A TRIBUTE

MARK Powell will be remembered by many as one of the unsung heroes of the trophy-laden John Hulse era.
But to the loyal diehard Lilywhites fans Powelly was every bit as much a superstar as the club's regular headline makers.
It helped being the sort of man he is. Warm, genuine and kind-hearted off the pitch and a true 100 per center on it. That is why the fans will miss him so much.
Manager Hulse was genuinely sorry to let him go, describing him as an excellent servant to Rhyl and a player he never had a cross word with.
But all good things must come to an end. Hulse has brought in new players during the summer and unfortunately there have to be casualties.
One thing is for sure - NEWI Cefn Druids, Powell's new club, will inherit a wholehearted performer who will never need motivating whatever the occasion.
Born on May 8,1975, Mark Powell came to Rhyl with a good footballing pedigree having been involved with Bolton Wanderers, Everton, Stalybridge Celtic and Winsford United, as well as being an England schoolboy international.
He was first brought to Belle Vue by then manager Lee Williams in 2000/01.
After a short stay, he switched to TNS and stayed there for another season before John Hulse brought him back to Rhyl in 2002/03.
It was to prove a very productive move for both player and manager. Powell played a major role in Rhyl lifting seven trophies over five seasons.
He hardly missed a game in those five campaigns, along the way winning a Welsh Premier championship medal, two Welsh Cups, two League Cups and a pair of North Wales Coast Challenge Cups.
Powell is also the only Rhyl player to feature in every one of the club's 10 European matches.
In all, Powell made 239 competitive appearances for the Lilies, also featuring in 25 games as a substitute, and netted 11 goals. He started 151 Welsh Premier matches for the club, and was sub in a further 21.
Powell hardly ever had a bad game for Rhyl. He was so solid in all departments and could defend and attack with equal prowess.
While the time was possibly right for him to move on, what he achieved at Belle Vue will never be forgotten.
Mark Powell - a genuine 100 per center and a truly nice guy. Everyone at Rhyl wishes you well.

As you say Dave a truly nice guy, who would always have time for the fans, always worked his socks off and was 100% reliable in defence.
Good luck Mark
Good luck Mark at Newi Cefn Druids, your sure of a very warm welcome upon your return to Belle Vue with Cefn. You were one of the most consistant performers at Rhyl FC in modern times, and will be sadly missed.
Dave
Nice one
Just one thing, I think Brewie has only played in 9 of the games as he missed the away game in Finland
Dave replies:
Are you sure Jon, Brewie is listed on the teamsheet for that game in Finland on both the Welsh Premier and Rhyl websites. You'd know as you were there, did the other websites make an error then?
Dave adds:
I've just changed the info Jon to confirm Powelly is the only Euro ever-present for Rhyl - thanks mate :-)
Yes Dave, he was injured in training the day before. Chris Roberts played instead.
Cheers
All the very best Mark as long as you dont stop us winning when we play against you.
