LLANELLI NICK THE POINTS AT BELLE VUE

By Dave Jones on Aug 25, 07 08:38 PM

RHYL 1 (Moran pen 86)
LLANELLI 2 (Griffiths 40, C Jones 69)
PETER Nicholas' Llanelli side gained an early psychological blow in the Welsh Premier title race with a hard fought win at Belle Vue.
Although Rhyl controlled possession for long periods, it was the Reds who produced the more clinical finishing and stretched their unbeaten league run over the Lilywhites to six matches.

There was early controversy when after just three minutes a dreadful two-footed challenge by Llanelli defender Stuart Jones on Stuart Graves brought the offender only a yellow card when a straight red would have been more deserved. Graves had to leave the field injured, causing the hosts to reshuffle at the back.
Jimmy Kelly's free-kick drifted just wide for the hosts then on eight minutes Andy Moran's right-footer missed the target by inches.
On 29 minutes Rhyl's Craig Jones should have done better from eight yards but he volleyed high and wide.
It was against the run of play when Llanelli grabbed a 40th minute lead. Kelly played a loose pass in midfield and Andrew Mumford capitalised, feeding Mark Pritchard whose centre across the six-yard box was finished at the far post by the ever-alert Rhys Griffiths.
Just before the interval, Craig Garside fired inches over for the home team.
Six minutes into the second-half the Reds brought on Craig Jones for Pritchard and this gave them more impetus in attack.
Jones broke swiftly on 55 minutes and set up Craig Williams whose fierce shot was brilliant saved by Lee Kendall.
Mumford struck a right-footer just wide before at the other end, Kelly narrowly missed the goal and Garside's chip floated tantalisingly past the post.
Kendall produced another fantastic save from a Jones rocket before the visitors made it 2-0 on 69 minutes. Craig Williams crossed low from the left and Jones converted from three yards.
Rhyl rallied but lacked penetration and Llanelli nearly made it three when a Williams volley prompted a stupendous tip-over by Kendall.
In the 84th minute the Lilies won a corner which keeper Ryan Harrison failed to deal with and Antonio Corbisiero handled Dave Cameron's header on the line. The Spaniard received an instant red card from referee Darren Adie.
Before the resulting penalty could be taken, Rhyl substitute Cameron was also dismissed for violent conduct.
Moran put away the spot-kick but it was a mere consolation for the home team.

SUBS:

Cameron: Unsettled Llanelli defence, but undid his good work by getting sent off - 6.
