TOP CLASS WORKOUT FOR LILYWHITES
RHYL 2 (Hunt 29, 65)
HEDNESFORD TOWN 3 (Dyer 19, Marshall 55, Styche 79)
CLASSY Unibond League Premier Division side Hednesford provided Rhyl with an ideal tough workout ahead of Thursday's return UEFA Cup clash with FC Haka.
The Pitmen won at Belle Vue by three goals to two, bringing to an end the Lilywhites' unbeaten pre-season run.
Town took a 19th minute lead when a poor headed clearance from a free-kick fell to Ross Dyer who volleyed into the roof of the net.
Rhyl levelled after 29 minutes when the bounce from Mark Connolly's long throw beat centre half Tom Marshall and Lee Hunt controlled before firing in from close range.
An acrobatic volley from James Brewerton following a Jimmy Kelly corner almost edged the Lilies in front, then at the other end Mario Pedro was just off target with a long range attempt before Simon Forsdick drove narrowly wide after leaving two defenders standing.
Hunt had a great chance just before the break when Andy Moran put him clear, but his right-foot effort was well saved by Rene Gilmartin.
It was all square at the break, but 10 minutes into the second-half Marshall rose highest to head a Tim Saunders flag-kick into the net.
It should have been 3-1 when Stuart Graves felled David McPherson in the box, but Reece Styche's penalty was comfortably saved by John Gann.
Brewerton's header was tipped over by Gilmartin before John Hulse's men squared the match on 65 minutes.
Substitute Dave Cameron leapt highest to head on a Carl Ruffer free-kick and with Hednesford at sixes and sevens as the ball bobbled around in the box, Hunt stabbed home from six yards.
But the Staffordshire visitors sealed the spoils in the 79th minute when Styche turned Brewerton far too easily and ran on to drive past replacement keeper Paul Whitfield.
RHYL: John Gann (Paul Whitfield 77), Mark Powell, James Brewerton, Mark Connolly, George Horan (Matthew Holt 59), Carl Ruffer (Chris Roberts 72), Craig Garside, Jimmy Kelly (Craig Jones 56), Lee Hunt (Michael White 72), Andy Moran (Dave Cameron 63), Stuart Graves. Sub not used: Gary Powell.
