MURTAGH SWITCHES TO WREXHAM!
NORTHERN Ireland Under-21 international Conall Murtagh is set to sign for Football League Two club Wrexham - just days after joining Conference North outfit Southport.
Lilywhites Online exclusively revealed on Sunday that Murtagh, 21, had decided to leave Rhyl and play full-time football at Haig Avenue under Peter Davenport.
But Southport have since agreed to tear-up the contact to allow the Irishman to resume his professional career.
It is a gilt-edged opportunity for Murtagh, who spent two years at Hearts FC, before going to the University in Manchester to study Biomedical Sciences.
During his first two years in Manchester, he has played in the Welsh Premier League, firstly for Connah's Quay Nomads, and last season for Rhyl, where he featured in the UEFA Cup ties against FK Suduva and helped the Lilywhites finish second in the league.
“This is a fantastic opportunity that I never saw coming. I am so lucky to be joining a wonderful club and I am delighted to be returning to professional football," said Murtagh.
The midfielder, who still has a year to complete at university with full support from Wrexham, had a very successful year at Rhyl where he was a fans’ favourite and received a number of accolades at the end of the season including being the youngest of 10 Welsh Premier League players nominated for the 2007 Player of the Year Awards and included in the Welsh Premier Dream Team first eleven.
“This is only the start and I have a lot of very hard work to do before I get anywhere near what I want to achieve in football," added Murtagh.
On leaving Rhyl, Murtagh said, “I really enjoyed my year at Rhyl who have the most, and the best fans in the Welsh Premier.
"They always made me feel at home and they always displayed a fantastic commitment to the club and the players, even when things were a bit rocky.
"The manager, John Hulse, Neil Young and all the staff were very supportive and it was a brilliant opportunity to play with a great bunch of players at Rhyl.”
