RESERVES SLIP UP BADLY
RHYL RESERVES 1 HOLYWELL TOWN 1
RHYL'S Welsh Alliance title hopes took a severe jolt when they could only draw with Holywell at Belle Vue - and it would have been even worse had Mitchell Booth not scored a 90th minute equaliser.
Second-placed Denbigh Town are now in the driving seat, needing seven points from their final three matches to make sure of the championship.
After tonight's (Tuesday) result, Rhyl have 65 points from 27 games, while Denbigh are on 62 from 25.
Town travel to Bethesda on Saturday and victory there will put them top on goal difference.
Rhyl's final league match is at home to Rhydymwyn next Wednesday and they have to win that one to maximise their title hopes.
However, if Simon Sedgwick's side can not improve on their poor performance against Holywell, it is hard to see them finishing top.
The Wellmen almost notched a shock third minute lead when Lee Taylor struck the post direct from a corner.
Rhyl were unlucky when Dan Evans' cross looped up off the keeper and the ball evaded both the racing in Mike Roose and Ian Dunn.
Sam Shorrocks and Evans blasted over before at the other end Danny Wynne was clean through but shot wide.
Town's Jack English chipped over the bar, then missed the target when he should have done better, and just before the break Rhyl's Simon Holloway beat four defenders and fed Roose whose byeline cross was blasted over by Evans.
English had an effort saved by Dave Vickers early in the second-half, then Sedgwick brought on Adam Jones and Dave Cameron for Shorrocks and Holloway.
Cameron was immediately effective, laying the ball off nicely for Dunn whose shot finished up nearer the corner flag than the goal.
On 61 minutes the visitors took the lead. The impressive English broke from halfway and fired home to stun the home supporters.
Three minutes later only a superb Vickers save kept out a Lee Taylor header as the Wellmen looked to wrap it up.
More poor shooting let Rhyl down before a free-kick from Matthew Roberts was headed into the keeper's arms by Cameron.
The hosts so nearly conceded another in the 84th minute when Matthew Holt cleared off the line from Kevin Wynne.
Finally, in the last minute Rhyl levelled when Vickers' long kick had Evans, Roose and Booth all chasing, the skipper winning the race to net his 17th goal this season.
Soon after Holywell, who only had 10 men, had Ian Taylor sent-off for dissent, then after the final whistle Chris Taylor and Lee Taylor were also red-carded. Three Taylors all dismissed!
The title race is not over yet, but Rhyl are definitely second favourites now.
