WELSH ALLIANCE TITLE RACE - CAN RHYL RESERVES STILL DO IT?
THE battle for the 2006/07 Welsh Alliance League championship has become a two-horse race between Rhyl Reserves and Denbigh Town.
After their 2-0 win over Rhyl at Central Park on Saturday (March 17), Tim Dyer's Denbigh side are now the title favourites, but there are still plenty of points to play for.
REMAINING FIXTURES
RHYL RESERVES: Played 25 Points 61 (GD 61)
Mar 28 - Glan Conwy (h)
Apr 7 - Pwllheli (h)
Apr 9 - Llanrug United (a)
Apr 17 - Holywell Town (h)
TBA - Rhydymwyn (h)
Title chances: With four of their last five matches at home one would expect Rhyl to take 12 points out of 12 at Belle Vue, but their game at Llanrug on April 9 will be very tough. All Simon Sedgwick's team can do is go all out for 15 points and hope Denbigh slip up.
DENBIGH TOWN: Played 21 Points 53 (GD 53)
Mar 24 - Pwllheli (a)
Mar 31 - Bethesda Athletic (h)
Apr 3 - Rhydymwyn (h)
Apr 7 - Glan Conwy (a)
Apr 14 - Llanberis (h)
Apr 17 - Sealand Rovers (a)
Apr 21 - Bethesda (a)
Apr 25 - Conwy United (h)
Apr 28 - Llanrug United (a)
Title chances: Town took a big step towards the championship with victory over Rhyl but the race is by no means over. Denbigh still have to make tricky trips to Pwllheli, Bethesda and Llanrug. Their busy cup schedule could also hamper them, but even runners-up spot will secure them promotion and they look certs to achieve that at least.
VIEWPOINT
Rhyl CAN still win the title, but they will probably need a maximum 15 points from their remaining five matches to do it.
Here is how I see things going:
RHYL RESERVES:
March 28 - Glan Conwy (home): Tough one this as Glan Conwy are in good form and their manager Paul Moroney will feel he has something to prove, but the Lilywhites to edge it 2-1. RHYL WIN.
April 7 - Pwllheli (home): Revenge will be on Rhyl's minds after losing at Pwllheli on the first day of the season. Again, it will be a hard test, but the Lilywhites should prove too strong and run out 3-1 victors. RHYL WIN.
April 9 - Llanrug United (away): Having lost 4-1 at Llanrug in the Cookson Cup semi final this month, what price Rhyl coming a cropper at Eithin Duon again? I believe this is the day when Simon Sedgwick's men show their true mettle and sneak a close-fought win 2-1. RHYL WIN.
April 17 - Holywell Town (home): Rhyl were held 1-1 at Holywell over the Christmas period but they'll make no mistake at Belle Vue, ending up 3-0 winners. RHYL WIN.
TBA - Rhydymwyn (home): Mid-table Rhydymwyn should prove no match for the Lilies on their own patch, Rhyl to take the honours 4-1. RHYL WIN.
FINAL TOTAL: 76 POINTS.
DENBIGH TOWN
March 24 - Pwllheli (away): Very hard game coming two days after a NWCFA Challenge Cup quarter final at Conwy. DRAW.
March 31 - Bethesda Athletic (home): Pesda not quite the force they were, Denbigh very strong at home. DENBIGH WIN.
April 3 - Rhydymwyn (home): Denbigh have really got Rhydymwyn's number these days, hard to see them slipping up. DENBIGH WIN.
April 7- Glan Conwy (away): No-one gets it easy at Glan Conwy, Town will do well to grab a draw. DRAW.
April 14 - Llanberis (home): No doubts about this one, a convincing home victory. DENBIGH WIN.
April 17 - Sealand Rovers (away): Denbigh always struggle on this ground but surely not this time against a team whipped 13-1 at home by Llanrug on March 17. DENBIGH WIN.
April 21 - Bethesda (away): Tricky one for Tim Dyer's side but they should prove too powerful. DENBIGH WIN.
April 25 - Conwy United (home): Virtual home banker. DENBIGH WIN.
April 28 - Llanrug United (away): Very tough game to finish the season. Llanrug won 3-1 at Central Park and will take at least a point off Denbigh at home. DRAW.
TOTAL POINTS: 74.
